taught the basics, you will
benefit from the excellent tuition and the great facilities that are
available. Page 8 will give you details

It is pleasing to see the Bracknell Ice Skating Club is receiving
good media coverage in the local press, and to read of the members'
achievements in the various competitions. The news is also good about
Bracknell's young skater Simon Waller, as he is back on the ice following
his injury. His coach, Jon Bonny, tells me that he is progressing
well and back on schedule. Jon is confident that Simon will succeed
in his ambition to take part in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. We
all wish him well.
Once again, the Group Communications Day was a great success with
everyone this year competing in mind games. There was a play-off at
the end of the afternoon that was more physical and our hotel accountant
suffered a knee injury. I am pleased to say that he has now fully
recovered.
The Group Communications Day commenced with the presentation of the
Employee of theYear award to the three worthy finalists. The details
of this are on page 11. It was very pleasing to see so many entries
for this award, with an array of managers' reasons for their recommendations.
It is clear that the training the Group provides is having a marked
effect on our employees and that they take the utmost pride in looking
after our customers. This pride also leads the staff to willingly
commit to an involvement in community relations, whether it is charitable,
caring or simply being attentive to our customers and the communities'
needs. The pages of this magazine highlight many of our activities
- an example of which is Bristol Ice Rink's hospitality for children
affected by the Chernobyl disaster (see page 6).
The Group continues to invest inwardly and the recent acquisition
of the Toyota dealership in Slough has grown our portfolio to five
motor centres. Further investment has been made with the refurbishment
of the Reading Toyota dealership (see page 2). The Group subsidiary,
Octagon Motor Company Limited, is now the Berkshire Toyota dealer
for the `car in front'. Octagon is also Berkshire's dealer for the
prestigious Lexus marque. Why not visit our showrooms?
The Swan at Streatley has changed during the last few months. Not
only has the 24- bedroom staff accommodation block been completed,
but the hotel is undergoing extensive redecoration works. I am sure
our customers are seeing the change and that they welcome this. The
restaurant has been renamed `Cygnetures' and the quality of the cuisine
has greatly improved so why not take a leisurely drive to this delightful
spot on the River Thames and try our fare? You can read all about
the preparations for a very entertaining festive season at both the
Coppid Beech Hotel and The Swan at Streatley on page 7.
The Group continues to provide charitable support to many selected
charities in many ways but, this year, my chosen charity is the Berkshire
branch of the British Red Cross. In support of my chosen charity,
the B52's Ice Hockey Club raised over £ 1,100 during its
Trophy weekend. My thanks to you for raising this magnificent sum.
Well, this is the last edition of Connections for 2002 - I do hope
you enjoy reading it. It is also my last chance to wish readers a
very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Perhaps a very early
greeting but, with the shops already displaying Christmas cards and
gifts, it is not out of place!

Simon's slip doesn't alter his course |
|
Simon Waller, the 15-year-old Bracknell skater who is sponsored
by John Nike Leisuresport Limited, has returned from injury to pursue
his ambition of representing Great Britain in the 2006 Olympic Games.
The young men's figure skating hopeful suffered a terrible injury
during practice when he broke his ankle while attempting a difficult
jump. Simon has made a speedy recovery and, after months out of
action, is back on the ice at John Nike Leisuresport, Bracknell,
much to the delight of his coach, Jon Bonny.
Jon told Connections: "I was concerned that on his return from
such a bad injury, Simon may suffer psychological problems when
attempting a triple salchow - the jump which led to his fall. I
should have known better - as soon as he got on the ice, one of
the things he tried first was the triple.
"Simon is very close to clean landing the triple toe loop and
double axle and is showing no ill effects from the injury."
In fact, Simon is ahead of schedule in his programme to challenge
for a place in the 2006 Olympics. He won his section at the Deeside
Open Competition - his first since injury and the start of a series
of open ice skating competitions he will take part in to qualify
for the British Championships.
