Test drive a 'friendly' car at Octagon now
 |
|
Customers of Octagon Motor
Company can take advantage of the world's most environmentally friendly
family motoring - by owning a Toyota Prius.
The Prius is the first mass produced hybrid vehicle in the world.
Powered by the Toyota Hybrid System (THS), it can run on either its
highly efficient, low emissions 1.5-litre petrol engine, its electric
motor, or a combination of both.
The ratio of power provided by each system is constantly monitored
electronically, depending on speed and load, to keep the car in its
most efficient operating mode. For example, in heavy traffic, the
petrol engine may shut down completely and the electric motor takes
over, making the Prius totally emissions-free.
The Prius is a refined, four- door, five-seater saloon. It has full
safety features, including anti-lock brakes, and driver and passenger
airbags. Extra features include electric windows and air conditioning.
And, as an added bonus to the low emissions and efficient fuel consumption,
Prius drivers can be quids in another way - under the
Government-initiative to support clean fuel, there is a £1,000
grant available to new Prius customers. Owners of the Prius will also
be exempt from the £5 a day toll charge being introduced in
London in 2003.
Ideal as a fleet or family car, the Prius has won `green' awards all
over Europe.

Full steam ahead for refurb |

|
The refurbishment of The
Swan at Streatley continues, with the staff accommodation being the
most recent part to have been completed.
What was once a four-bedroom house in the hotel grounds has been converted
into a 24- bedroom living area for the hotel staff by Nike
Construction.
The external renovation of the hotel (such as restoring the timber
work on the outside of the building) is ongoing and still on course
to be completed by the end of 2003. The Magdalen College barge has
also received a total external refurbishment to return it to its
former glory.
The latest addition to the facilities at The Swan at Streatley is
The Streatley Belle, a small electric-powered boat which is available
to hire on the river outside the hotel for £20 an hour. It can
carry up to six passengers for a trip up the Thames. The hotel can
provide picnics or packed lunches for customers hiring the boat.
Alan Blenkinsopp, Hotel Operations Director, said: "In keeping
with the Nike Group's commitment to the environment, the boat has
a
'green' electric engine which does not pollute the river with petrol
or diesel."
As well as working to improve its facilities, The Swan at Streatley
has also been building relationships with the local community. The
communities at Streatley and Goring have been invited to events such
as jazz evenings and a barbecue held on the hotel's adjacent island.
The Swan at Streatley was also the major sponsor of the Goring and
Streatley Regatta.
