An honour and a privilege

There is little doubt that
my lead item in this issue of Connections must be about the Queen's
Golden Jubilee.What a wonderful nation
Great Britain is - what a fortunate nation Great Britain is to have
as a head of state HM Queen Elizabeth II.
The passing of the Queen Mother left the nation with great sorrow
but it is now plain to see that the nation has accepted HM Queen Elizabeth
II as their matriarch with great joy and adoration. The celebrations
during the holiday weekend leave no doubt about the
affection everyone has for this remarkable Royal.
The Nike Group of Companies proudly joined in the Golden jubilee celebrations
as the principal sponsor of Berkshire Golden Youth,a wonderful event
organised under the auspices of the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire,
Philip Wroughton. The event brought together 2,500 of
Berkshire's youth to show their achievements in sports, the arts,
culture and much more. The event, on 10 May, saw the culmination of
the hard work of Berkshire's Golden Youth when they performed for
HM The Queen and Prince Philip at Bisham Abbey. I had the honour of
escorting Her Majesty around the Nike Group's exhibits at the festival
where she chatted with some of the people involved with our presentation.
Her Majesty was particularly interested in the blind skiers where
she showed some amazement at the fact that one skier was totally blind
yet enjoying, without fear, the act of skiing down our slope.
Her Majesty also chatted with young Boprey - a Buzzers ice hockey
junior bee. Remy clearly remembered his manners when he took off his
baseball cap and expressed the reason for not being on the ice. Queen
Elizabeth also commented on the height of the basketball players as
she watched the play and said that she had met a basketball player
the previous evening and had been impressed by his great height.
Perhaps, this is the moment to say how impressed I was with the Nike
Group displays and to express my sincere thanks to everyone
involved. It was wonderful to see the huge interest created in our
area in the sports of skiing, ice hockey and ice skating, and
basketball. I am certain that it left a lasting impression on The
Queen, and all involved can be very proud of their contribution. My
sincere heartfelt thanks to the staff, the voluntary helpers and the
management for making sure that this one-off, very special, occasion
made its mark - and it did.A full report from the event is on page
one.
Our last season in ice hockey and basketball did not bode well for
our Superleague and Premier League teams with each finishing well
down the league tables. Great disappointment is felt all around but
this is not the place to dwell and we must positively look forward.
I know that both coaches are preparing their teams with an eye to
great achievements in the next season.
Success has been achieved with the approval of a planning application
for a golf driving range adjacent to the Bracknell John Nike Leisuresport
Complex. This will increase the range of leisure facilities that can
be offered to the community and should be an
interesting building contract for Nike Construction Limited. I am
certainly looking forward the commencement of this project and the
opening of the facility.
Is it too soon to write about the festive plans already being prepared
for the season of good will? I think not and give you a flavour
of the festivities planned at The
