Renovations on the menu for the Swan |
|
At the end of last year,
the Nike Group increased its portfolio of companies by purchasing
The Swan Diplomat Hotel in Streatley-on-
Thames near Reading. Now, having re-named it The Swan at Streatley,
the company is restoring the 17th century hotel to its former glory.
The Swan at Streatley, originally an eight- bedroom inn, now houses
six meeting rooms, one with the capacity to hold 100 people; four
further function rooms; an 80-seater restaurant; and leisure club
with pool, steam room and gym. Most of its 46 en-suite bedrooms offer
a superb view across the River Thames.
The hotel is remaining fully functional during renovation work, which
started in January 2002 and is expected to take between 18 months
and two years to complete. The work is being carried out by Nike Construction
and, to cause minimum disruption to guests, is being done in stages.
By the end of May, a house in the grounds will have been converted
into staff accommodation and repairs to the exterior of the building
will be ongoing. After most of the outside is finished, work will
begin
on revamping the function rooms, restaurant and bedrooms.
Alan Blenkinsopp, Hotel Operations Director, managed the Swan in the
1980s for five years before joining the Nike Group and he is
delighted to be back in charge. He said: "The Swan at Streatley
is the perfect complement to the Coppid Beech Hotel in Bracknell,
in
terms of its location and its guests. Our aim is to offer customers
the same standards of service that they have come to expect from the
Nike Group and, once the hotel's refurbishment is complete, we hope
to achieve a four-red star ranking and three AA rosettes for the restaurant."
Work on achieving this standard has already started, with the appointment
of Head Chef, Anthony Jones, who introduced his culinary skills to
the hotel on 15 February. Anthony joins the Nike Group from Champneys
Health Spa in Hertfordshire. He has also worked as a Sous Chef at
the five-star Celtic Manor in Wales and overseas in Massachusetts,
USA.
Neil Thrift, Executive Chef at the Coppid Beech Hotel, said of Anthony's
appointment: "I am really looking forward to working with
Anthony and having the opportunity to regain The Swan at Streatley's
reputation for fine cuisine."
If you would like to make a booking at The Swan at Streatley and sample

was the best ever pre-Christmas sale for Leisuresport World, selling
all the equipment and clothing needed to hit the slopes. Due to
the ever-increasing popularity of the sales, the winter 2002 event
will be bigger and better - combining the usual format with a ski
and snowboard exhibition. Watch the local press for details. As Connections
went to press, another sale was due to take place in February.
