John Nike's update

Isn't it great? The honour of an OBE with the Citation - For services to Business and to the community in Bracknell, Berkshire. Can you imagine my delight when I picked up the pale grey envelope from the floor?
Of course, a thrill ran through me as I read the words 'On Her Majesty's Service'. Too late for my call up papers - anyway, I've done that stint. In the bottom left hand corner the printed words read 'Prime Minister' and above URGENT.PERSONAL. loomed out at me; but my mind thought 'I have been recognised'. The opening of the envelop confirmed this. It read 'The Prime Minister has asked me to inform you, in strict confidence, that he has it in mind, on the occasion of the forthcoming list of New Year Honours, to submit your name to The Queen with a recommendation that Her Majesty may be graciously pleased to approve that you be appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.' I sadly reflected on reading this that my mother had not lived to see what she so dearly wished for me. Just nine months too late but I am certain she knew the path of fate would take me to this honour. I am thrilled, delighted, elated and, most of all, cock-a-hoop to receive the recognition. And, my thanks go to all for their support in helping me to achieve this award. I shall wear it with pride and honour in acknowledgement of the community.
Hasn't time flown since the last publication? Tempus fugit but how I wish that time would simply stand still. The year 2002 and, whether you say it backwards or forwards, there is little doubt that time flies. So, before it passes by any more, I wish our readers a very happy and successful New Year.

New Corolla is a driver's dream!

The new Toyota Corolla went on sale in January amid a mass of publicity.
It is available in five styles: a three or five-door hatchback, a saloon (to be launched in the summer), an estate and, for the first time, a compact multiperson vehicle (MPV) called the Corolla Verso.
There is an equally wide range of engines available for the cars, from an economical two-litre diesel, to a selection of three petrol engines (1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 litres).
The Octagon Motor Company held two customer days to celebrate the launch of the new Corolla, at the Coppid Beech Hotel on 17 January, and on 31 January at The Swan at Streatley.
David Lamb, Operations Director, said: "We had a great deal of interest in the new Corolla even before the launch. We are able to offer all our customers a model to suit their needs, ranging from the practicality of the Verso to the dynamic T-sport."
The cars have a new, sporty image to complement Toyota's well-established reputation for quality and reliability, as well as accessories - like a satellite navigation system - previously found exclusively in executive saloons. Other benefits include an all-new chassis which ensures excellent performance and fuel economy with low emissions.
Since its original launch in 1966, over 29 million Corollas have been sold worldwide, making it not only the most popular Toyota model, but also the biggest selling car in history.

The Nike Group in brief

The designated charity for the Nike Group of Companies for 2002 is the Bracknell branch of the British Red Cross. Collection for the charity started on bonfire night last year, where £530 was raised.
Representatives from the charity also collected at the pantomime on ice and raised nearly £400. John Nike, Chairman, chose the British Red Cross because of the suffering in Afghanistan highlighted by the war on terrorism. He presented a cheque to the charity at the pantomime.

The Braeside development, off John Nike Way, Bracknell, Berkshire, is selling well - 10 of the exclusive apartments have been reserved so far and the first purchaser moved in before Christmas. Work has now started on the three and four bedroom luxury homes.
